The Victorian Government, via the Victorian Funds Management Cooperation, invests more than $100 million in big tobacco companies.
The Greens will introduce legislation to amend the Victorian Funds Management Corporation Act to prohibit the Victorian Government from investing in tobacco companies.

To the Premier and Opposition Leader,
Our government should not be profiteering from a product that is responsible for the deaths of around 4,000 Victorians each year and millions of people world-wide.
Tobacco companies are notorious for their dodgy practices, particularly in developing countries, and tobacco is a uniquely unethical product. It is the only product that when used as designed kills the majority of its consumers.
There is a world-wide trend of divestment from tobacco companies. The commonwealth investment funds and many state, territory and superannuation funds have divested from tobacco.
It’s a disgrace that the Victorian Government fund continues to invest in this unethical business.
I ask that you legislate to prohibit the Victorian Government from investing in tobacco companies.
