Four years ago, the Grandview Hotel in Station Street, Fairfield was controversially granted a permit for 50 pokies by the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) and the Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation (VCGLR), against the wishes of local residents, traders, public health experts and Darebin Council.
The planning permit for the installation of these pokies is due to expire and the Grandview has reapplied for planning permission from Darebin Council.
We know the Darebin community loses around $90 million per year to these harmful machines. We also know there is an established link between gambling-related harm and family violence. Postcodes with no pokies were associated with 20% fewer family violence incidents and 30% fewer family violence assaults when compared with postcodes with 75 machines per 10,000 residents.
The Grandview is located close to several mental health services, women's shelters, schools and public housing estates, putting some of our most vulnerable residents in harm's way.
Darebin Councillors are due to decide on this planning permit on 10th of October. Stopping future harm from these machines begins with stopping the approval of this planning permit. Sign this petition to send a strong message to Darebin Councillors that pokies are not welcome at the Grandview.
