DUE TO COVID19 THE ORGANISERS HAVE CANCELLED THIS EVENT
On Tuesday, February 24th, The Liberal & Labor backed councillors of the City of Greater Geelong made a decision, based on no supporting evidence, that the separated bike lanes in Malop Street installed as part of the Green Spine Project are creating excessive congestion problems for cars. This is despite the fact that this road has been marked for active transport use in multiple council strategies. These councillors voted to spend up to $2 million to remove the separated bike lane on the north side of Malop St and replace it with car parks and turning lanes causing more disruption to local traders and hurting Geelong's active transport network for decades to come.
There is no business case to support this destruction. No plans. No civic consultation. No report from the City CEO. No expert opinion. NOTHING!
The Green Spine is an $8 million award-winning project that is yet to be completed and it should be seen through not ripped up before it's even a quarter finished.
Extinction Rebellion Geelong in collaboration with Bicycle Users Geelong has organised a rally to protest this decision to remove the north side bike lane from the Malop Street Green Spine. You can find the event on Facebook here: https://www.facebook.com/events/507820353452373/
We encourage all members to attend in wearing greens t-shirts proudly to show the community that we support the Green Spine and Active Transport in our cities.
The rally will kick off on the steps of Geelong City Hall then we will cycle/walk through the CBD including the affected area of Malop St.
If you would like to volunteer after the rally to talk with the community about Active Transport in Geelong and collect sign-ups for the Greens we'd love your help. Please contact [email protected] to volunteer.
