On Wednesday 22 August, Samantha Dunn MP will be letting the Victorian Parliament know that our forests are worth more than paper.
On behalf of the Victorian Greens, Samantha will be introducing a private members bill to repeal the outdated Wood Pulp Agreement Act. Our Bill aims to end the over 80 year old deal the Maryvale Paper Mill has with the Victorian Government which guarantees supply of our native forests!
This legislated guarantee puts pressure on our dwindling forests and threatens the species that rely on these forests for habitat.
Maryvale Paper Mill (owned by Japanese company Nippon Paper) owns hectares of plantations in Western Victoria. Instead of using a plantation supply they already own, they export these logs off to Japan and opt to buy native forest fibre at a fraction of the cost. All to make Reflex Ultra White copy paper.
Only 30% of fibre supply through the Maryvale facility relies on native forests. We know they can do things differently. It’s time to put an end to these ridiculous subsidies and guaranteed supply and here's the chance for the Government and Coalition to do so.
