Rental Health

It's like a roadworthy for your rental. Read the full Greens proposal here.

Dear Premier Napthine,

One third of Australia's households are rented. For a growing number of Victorians, renting is their only long term option. So it should be a secure, well maintained, comfortable option with insulation and other measures to reduce their energy bills.

Nearly every product on the market has to meet standards, from food to cars to computers. But there is no roadworthy for your rental.

Rent is often a person’s biggest weekly expense, but affordable rentals can be damp, drafty places with little or no heating and cooking facilities.

Good accommodation leads to better health. Insulation, good repair and energy efficient appliances decrease the cost of living, as well as reducing our impact on the environment and climate change.

All rental homes should have to meet basic standards in relation to repair, comfort, safety, facilities and energy efficiency.

Landlords should need a lawful reason to evict renters. All Victorians deserve basic, decent accommodation.

I strongly urge you to support basic standards for rental accommodation.

I’ve been renting in Melbourne since finishing High School 14 years ago. Throughout that time 30% of my weekly income has been subjected to paying wealthy home-owner mortgages. Now with absolute no option to buy into the market, I’ll be forced to continue to rent in my city for the rest of my life (I’ll spare you the math). If thats the case can we please start talking about real estate agent blackmailing tenants, and the possibility of rent regulated areas in Melbourne.

    thanks

I am currently having to move out of a rental property after only being here for 3 months because the Landlord does not want to fix our leaking roof and the law favours the Landlord over the renter when we take it to VCAT.

What an excellent proposal. Rental properties must meet standards and yes, all Victorians deserve appropriate accommodation and a fair system.

I ahve experienced the best and worst of rentals, and the worst are detrimental to people’s health – what better reason to have minimum health and safety standards?
